Oakwood Church began in 1958 as a church plant consisting of four families. The plant was sponsored by two churches in Grand Rapids: the Bethel and Plainfield Christian Reformed Churches.
In its infancy, Oakwood met in a building at 321 S Broas St within the city limits of Belding, MI. During this time, the church was known as Belding Christian Reformed Church. However, the chruch quickly outgrew this space.
On March 18, 1973, Oakwood held its first service at our current location, 8750 Storey Rd. Since this time, several further building projects have added a fellowship space, classroom and office spaces, and a separate workspace for our Cadet boys club.
It is at this new location that Oakwood adopted its current name: Oakwood Christian Reformed Church. The name was inspired by the numerous oak trees that still dot our church grounds. The strength and sturdiness of these trees are a symbol for us of the solid and firm foundation that we have in Jesus Christ. They also represent the strong pillar that this church seeks to be in our community, supporting and proclaiming the truths of God in word and deed.
In 2024, Oakwood began the Church Legacy Project through the Center for Church Renewal at Calvin Seminary. Emerging from this process, the church has gained momentum as we seek to bring new life and fresh vision to the faithful presence Oakwood has had in the Belding and Greenville areas and beyond. In and through Jesus Christ, we are strong, and just as we thank him for writing our history, we trust him to write our future.
